Garden Tips: Coffee Grounds
Why give those spent coffee grounds to the landfill, instead spread them across your flower or vegetable garden.
There are four viable purposes for using coffee grounds in your garden.
1) . Insect repellent. Ants, snails and other insects hate coffee grinds because of their bitter taste. So spread those old grounds over your garden, till them in or leave them on top of the soil, after sowing your seeds. The grounds will not only help give nutrients to your newly planted seeds, but those pests will stay away from your plants.
2) Animal repellent. Coffee Grounds are great to also keep animals away from your garden too. Mix your coffee grounds with citrus peels from lemons, limes, oranges and place them at the base of your plants. Animals like dogs, cats and even small critters like squirrels and chipmunks will stay away as well.
3) Robust Flowering Plants will love your spent coffee grounds due to the acid it produces in the soil. The nutrients it will produce in the soil will help give you beautiful flowers throughout the season.
4) Compost Bin enhancement. Coffee grounds help break down items in your compost bin, while adding valuable nutrients to the final product.
You can begin spreading those grounds any time of the year, why not start now.
