Cleaning Tip: Washing those Blinds
When I was a child I had the pleasure of washing the old metal Venetian blinds in a tub filled with hot soapy water with vinegar. I used a large sponge to clean each and every piece by hand. It was not a fun job, however, it was either that, or stand at the window and clean each piece by hand. I opted for the tub version because at least the hot soapy water helped make the job go faster.
At least two to three times a year, depending on how fast your blinds get dirty, we must clean them. To help make the job easier, it is best to dust them every week at the same time as you dust the rest of the room.
Today, there are many varieties of blinds to wash - plastic, metal and now material type blinds; each have a different cleaning method unique to the type you have. For the plastic and metal type, you can just take them down and use the old method of soaking them in the tub. Or if you have a back yard, lay out an old sheet, place the blinds flat, then hit them with the hose, grab your soapy sponge and scrub, then hit them with the hose once again. Dry them by hand before putting them back up on the window.
If you have material style or wooden style blinds, these both should be cleaned differently. Material style can be placed on an old sheet and hosted down. Be careful to read cleaning directions to ensure you don't use the wrong type of soap or cleaning process. For wooden blinds, use Murphy's Oil and a soft cloth to both clean each slat, while preserving the wood pieces.
