French Dip Sandwich

The origins of the French Dip sandwich have been debated for many years. Some say it was created by the chefs at Philippe's in Los Angeles others say it was created in Chicago where it's called the Italian Beef Sandwich. I say it was created at Momma Leone's Restaurant. in Little Italy, New York City. I say that because Momma Leone's was where I had my first French Dip Sandwich and boy was that good. Smothered in melted Swiss Cheese over thin slices of beef roast on a soft hoagie roll with perfect au jus gravy for dipping. Oh, my mouth is watering for one of these amazing sandwiches right now. So here is how I make my homemade French Dip Sandwiches.

Thin slices of roast beef

6" french or hoagie roll
butter
garlic powder
grated gruyere or Swiss Cheese

In a skillet melt your butter and place roast beef slices in the skillet to heat up. Place on a Hoagie roll and cover with cheese then place in oven until cheese has melted completely.

Au Jus Gravy
Beef stock
dried thyme
salt
pepper
sherry wine
Worcestershire sauce
garlic powder
onion powder

In a saucepan mix the Au Jus ingredients together and heat until it comes to a boil. Place hot gravy in a ramakin and place it on a plate with the sandwich. Enjoy!
