Household Tip: Spring Cleaning
It is time to make that Spring Cleaning chores list. Every April should be considered your Spring cleaning month, but that doesn't mean you have to do it all in one day. If you can accomplish the entire house in one day, send me your phone number, because I'd love to know your secrets.
The best household manager is able to organize the cleaning of a house with ease and efficiency. When you conduct your Spring Cleaning, you should also make a list of what needs to be repaired, replaced, or just simply move furniture around.
Repairs should be broken down into three categories: 1) You can do. 2) Need help doing. 3) No way possible, call in a professional. The things you can do are simple, re-caulk the sealer around the tub. (find a DIY video on YouTube.) Paint a room a different color, or simply freshen up scuff marks. Tile replacement can be done yourself, if you're game, (Plenty of How to Video's out there to learn from). Move appliances to clean under and behind, might need assistance from someone stronger. Replace molding is an easy job to do, but if you're not comfortable, ask a friend to help you. Any major jobs, like electrical should always be done by a licensed electrician. I'd recommend you call in a plumber for heavy duty jobs, but to replace a flushing handle, you can do it. Replace a window, should be done by a pro, unless you've got a carpenter friend who you can barter with to help you.
Any repairs to furniture, replacing material, fixing a leg, or an arm, can easily be done yourself, if you're handy. If you're not handy, ask a friend who is to help you. Or consider replacing it with new or something from a second hand store.
Look in your cabinets to see if any of them need to be reorganized, cleaned out, or decide if the space can be used more effectively. For example: go through you containers, lids, and other plastic containers. Do they match? Are any of them deformed, cracked, or the lid missing? Consider using the one's without a lid to start a small herb garden. Or use them for the kids painting projects. Recycling doesn't mean sending it to the landfill, it means re-appropriate the use of the item within the household first.
This is also the time to look at linens, curtains, pillows, towels, etc. Do they need mending or should they be replaced? Make a list and search out those sales when you have the money to replace them.
If you walk through your home or apartment and make a list of what needs to be done in each room, you'll be able to create a Spring Cleaning schedule that is feasible to your schedule. Again, while you're in each room, eye the room meticulously for any defects, possible changes, or repairs needed - note them down for consideration.
When you know what needs to be done around the house, it makes it so much easier to accomplish it. :)
