This is the best snack/lunch or even dinner dish you could have on your family's menu list because it's quick, fast, and easy to make. It even freezes well too. Let's get started.
Ingredients:
Pizza dough can be homemade or even store-bought. I've used both and both work well. One ball or roll is enough for one stromboli
1 lb Italian sausage
1-1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 package of sliced pepperoni
2 cups of pizza sauce
1 cup shredded romano cheese
1 egg
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F
In a skillet pan, cook the Italian sausage until it is browned. be sure to cut it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. You'll want little chunks to be used in your stromboli.
On a baking pan (cookie sheet) place a piece of parchment paper on top and lightly flour. You'll want to roll out your dough to form a large rectangle.
Brush a thin layer of pizza sauce on the dough. then layer your crumbled sausage then mozzarella cheese on top. Then place pepperoni slices on top and sprinkle with the romano cheese. Once this is done begin to roll on the short side of the dough to form a seal over and around the filling. Now gently roll the long side of the dough, carefully using the parchment paper begin to roll the dough across the mixture until you have reached the opposite side. Then pinch together the dough to ensure a good seal. Be sure to place the seam side down on the parchment on the cookie sheet.
Beat the egg with 1 teaspoon of water and then brush across the top and sides of the stromboli. I always sprinkle a little of the Romano cheese mixed with a bit of Parmesan cheese on top. It should resemble a fat long turnover.
Turn your oven down to 350 Degrees F. Place stromboli in the oven and cook for 18 or so minutes or until golden brown. Once you take it out of the oven let it set for about 10 minutes. To test it cut in half, you'll know it's cooked because everything will begin to boil out of the dough. if it doesn't put it back in the oven for another 5 minutes. Serve with hot warm pizza sauce, or as I like to eat it, horseradish mustard on the side.
