Apple Charlotte
During the 17th century,
Queen Charlotte of England, wife of King George II was the patron of apple
growers throughout the royal kingdom. In honor of Queen Charlotte the apple
growers created a desert made with apples and named it after her. It truly is a
royal delight for sure. It was also simple to make and use up bread that would go
bad if not eaten soon. Cooks would line a mold with the bread and fill it with
sliced apples smothered in caramel sauce. Yum. Mouthwatering for sure. Try it,
you’ll love it.
This recipe will make 4-6 servings
based on the number of apples you use.
Ingredients
Apples 4-6
Sliced Bread 3-4 slices or 1 loaf
of French Bread shredded into crumbs
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoons mace
3 fresh lemons, zested.
6 tablespoons Butter cold
1 stick of butter melted.
Honey. 3 Tablespoons
Ground Cinnamon. 1 tablespoon
Directions:
In a bowl combine brown sugar,
cinnamon, nutmeg, and mace then reserve 1 cup of mixture to be used at the end.
Core, peel, and cut the apples into
chunky pieces and place pieces into a bowl mixed with lemon zest.
In a Dutch oven or mold fill the bottom
with breadcrumbs and layer apples with pads of butter and repeat until the mold or Dutch
oven is filled. For the top layer combine the reserved cup of breadcrumbs and
melted butter, honey, and a reserved mixture of spices together and sprinkle on
top with more butter. Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown. Serve with
Vanilla Ice Cream on the side. Enjoy!
