Cooking Tips: Ice Cube Trays and other uses
We all have our regular ice cube trays in the freezer that provide us with frozen water to help cool off our warm drinks; but did you know that there are other uses for ice cube tray? Here are a few ideas.
Butter Trays
There are those times when you've got a dinner party, or a large gathering where the use of butter is needed. Instead of displaying that boring butter dish with just a single brick of butter, why not spice it up a bit with flavored butters, in individual servings. The picture here is the best size for single serving butter slabs. Buy a box or two of stick butter and set on counter for a bit to get to room temperature. Then in a bowl, using a fork, slightly cream your butter into workable butter. This is the time when you can make variations of flavored butter, I'll get into those types of butters in a different post. When the butter is soft enough to work with, using a small spoon and spatula, scoop the butter, one spoonful at a time (just as you'd do when making cookies), using your spatula place the butter into the ice cube tray. Once you're finished filling up the tray, place it in the freezer over night. Remove from tray and store in a freezer bag, and be sure to label the bag.
Sauce Tray
Left over sauce, or make ahead sauce can be stored in this type of ice cube tray. Place in freezer overnight, then pop out and place in freezer bag that is labeled properly. This will give you the capability of using one or two based on serving desire.
Gravy Tray
Left over gravy, or make ahead gravy can be stored in this type of ice cube tray. Place in freezer overnight, then pop out and place in freezer bag that is labeled properly. This will give you the capability of using one or two based on serving desire.
Please note an important rule when using this type of freezing technique - never use these trays for anything else but food use. You've spent good money on your food, and your creative mind has you dividing it up into little cubes for safe storage; the last thing you want to do is serve a dish that tastes like paint, cleaning solvent, or something else. Label these if necessary and tell your family not to use them for anything else.
Also, all the above food saving ideas can be stored in the freezer for up to three month each. Enjoy
